Deprecation notice for radar 5 minute forecasted radar reflectivity composites over the Netherlands up to 2 hours ahead

As of 05-10-2026, the dataset radar_forecast/1.0 has been deprecated. As of 01-12-2026, the dataset will no longer receive updates.

This dataset has been replaced by a better alternative that matches the KNMI app.

The main differences:

• Coverage: the legacy product is based on Den Helder and Herwijnen, whilst the pySTEPS product uses eight radars (2x KNMI, 3x KMI and 3x DWD).
• Interpretation: the legacy product is a composite based on reflectivity; pySTEPS uses mm/h, as described in the abstract.

The alternative does not provide a reflectivity composite. Users who depend on the reflectivity composite will need to adapt their systems.
